We have many clients there, so I must ask: is this true? We shipped a product to India, but customs detained it, insisting that the addresses on our client’s documents did not match. Our client had recently moved into a rented apartment, and although she has a temporary document showing her new address, her official paperwork has not yet been updated. Customs claimed that, by law, they were not allowed to release a shipment when the addresses differ!
Our client confided that this practice is all too common—she avoided ordering from our shipping partner because, in her words, customs routinely confiscated shipments as if it were a standard operating procedure. Even though we were more than willing to have the shipment returned—paying for a second delivery to get it back—customs flatly refused to return it.
I’m reaching out to our clients to hear your thoughts and to learn if you know of any freight company that avoids these issues and ensures that shipments clear customs without hassle.
We had never heard of such a rule before—that a person must receive their shipment at their official address. What if they live with their partner or are vacationing at a resort? How are they supposed to collect their package? This strikes us as utterly absurd.
Moreover, we have shipped several times in the past without ever encountering such an issue.
What do you think?
