The history of the famous Qi Gong set of exercises-The Eight Pieces of Silk Brocade goes back likely a 1000 years back to the Song Dynasty in China. General Yue Fei, a skilled martial artist, created the exercise to maintain the health and vitality of his soldiers. The exercises were compared to silk brocade because of the comparison to the feeling of smooth flow of energy of the movements to silk. Soldiers found improved health and strength from practicing the exercises since they unblocked the flow of Qui in the body. In addition to the physical health benefits people noticed that they feel increased clarity, mental focus and inner peace. Soon the exercises became popular among the civilians as well.
The exercises are as follows:
- Two hands Hold up the Heaven
This exercise is directed at balancing the Triple Burner, which is seen as one of the body’s organs in Chinese medicine, and is viewed as an energetic container of the other organs. It consists of three parts and balances the circulation of Qi within the body.
- Drawing the Bow to Shoot the Eagle
This exercise is aimed at the lungs and liver, and also benefits the spleen. It increases the strength in the lower part of the body and improves balance
- Separate Heaven and Earth
Benefits the stomach. Increases shoulder flexibility. It balances the liver and gallbladder meridians.
- Wise Owl Gazes Backwards
This exercise stretches the neck and removes fatigue. It benefits the entire body by massaging internal organs and improving immunity. Tension of hips and even the eyes is relieved as well.
- Sway the Head and Shake the Tail
This exercise regulates the function of lungs and the heart. It removes the pathogenic fire from the body and especially from the heart. Exces fire is shaken down to the kidneys and removed from the heart where it can cause ailments. It relieves lower back pain and pain in the gluteal area caused from prolonged sitting.
- Two Hands Hold the Feet to Strengthen the Kidneys and the Waist
This exercise improves kidney function and gives strength to the waist.
- Clench the Fists and Glare Fiercely
This exercise increases vitality and muscular strength. It affects the whole body, particularly the legs. The Qi of the liver is strengthened and the blood flow is improved. Tendon strength is increased. Eye health is improved since it is connected to liver function.
- Bouncing on the toes
This exercise smooths the qui flow after practicing the preceding exercises. It balances the Du Mai Meridian, which is called the Sea of Yang energy in the body. It calms and grounds the person.
